Mayor Lends a Helping Hand On New Affordable Homes Development

THE Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Alison Steer, donned her hardhat, hi-vis vest and protective goggles to lend a hand to contractors at the new development of homes in Victoria Street, St Albans.

Chief Executive of Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association, David Bogle, Project Manager from Laing O’Rourke, John Urry, Technical Manager from Linden Homes, Richard Lewis and Jolyon Watson from HBW Partnerships all joined the Mayor at the site.

On Friday March 30 the Mayor had a look around the new development and even got behind the controls of a JCB digger to help move some earth in preparation for a new multi storey car park.

Mayor Alison Steer said: “From what I have seen this is a brilliant use of the site to deliver much needed homes in St Albans. I am delighted that 30% of the development will be used as affordable homes for local people to get a foot on the property ladder.

The development consists of 362 new homes of which 107 are affordable homes being managed by Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association. The development will also include a new doctors surgery, commercial units and health centre.

John Urry, Project Manager from Laing 0’Rourke added: “Laing 0’Rourke have been involved with the pre planning of this development since 2004. It is fantastic that we are underway with the construction and hope that we are not a nuisance to people using the area.”

The development is located on the car park of St Albans railway station. The developers are currently building a multi storey car park. The remaining land will then be developed for the new homes.

Richard Lewis, Technical Manager from Linden Homes said: “This is a high profile development in the heart of St Albans which has taken years of planning with St Albans District Council, Network Rail, and First Capital Connect. The scheme will not only deliver much needed new housing to the area, local residents will benefit from infrastructure and station work improvements.”

David Bogle, Chief Executive of Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association, ended by saying: “We are delighted to be managing the 107 affordable homes at this new development which will become one of our largest schemes. The homes will be available for rent, key workers or to buy through the Shared Ownership scheme.”
