New Homes in Stevenage

A Superb development of 24 new homes was officially opened in Stevenage on Thursday July 12th by the Mayor of Stevenage Councillor Graham Clark and the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Teddy Faure Walker.

The new affordable homes, known as Hepworth Court, have been developed by Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association (HPCHA) and consist of 24 two-bedroom apartments. The site located in Chells Way used to be a shopping parade with apartments above them and as part of the development a convenience store has been built.

The apartments are available for rent and for sale under the Shared Ownership scheme.

Shared Ownership is an alternative to renting a home or buying a property outright. It helps people who want to buy a home of their own but cannot afford to do so. Through Shared Ownership it is possible to buy a share in a property (50%) and pay rent on the remaining share. The total costs of rent and mortgage payments will be lower than the cost of buying the same home outright. In the future you have the option to buy additional shares.

There are only three apartments remaining and are being sold for £72,500, which is a 50% share of the market value (£145,000). On the remaining 50% the homeowner will pay a monthly rent.

Councillor Graham Clark, Mayor of Stevenage, said: “I would like to congratulate Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association on this fantastic development. This is a great example of partnership working which has delivered affordable homes for first time buyers in the Borough. This site has been completed to the highest quality and I am pleased that local people who have a real housing need have an opportunity to get on to the property ladder. I am looking forward to seeing further Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association development in Stevenage.”

The new apartments benefit from two good-sized bedrooms, fitted kitchen and bathroom, double-glazing, secure parking and a large balcony.

Development at the new site, which used to be a timber workshop, started in December 2005 and was completed in December 2006.

HPCHA Chief Executive David Bogle added: “I would like to thank everyone who has worked with us in delivering this development of affordable homes.

“This new development is just 24 homes from 621 affordable homes that we are building in Hertfordshire over the next three years as part of the Housing Corporation's 2006-2008 programme.

“It is an exciting time for housing and we aim to play a major role in providing high quality affordable housing for the local community who have a housing need.”

Vice Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Teddy Faure Walker commented: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved on this wonderful development. The shared ownership scheme is a fantastic opportunity for first time buyers to get on the property ladder and I am pleased that Stevenage people will benefit from this new development. As a farmer I am also particularly pleased to see developments on Brownfield sites and not greenbelt.”
