Local couple take first steps onto the housing ladder in Tring

A young couple are celebrating becoming the first residents to move into their new home at Hightown Homes’ development of affordable houses in the conservation area at White House Gardens in Tring.

Having grown up in Tring and working locally, first time buyers Michaela Stafford and Lewis Smith were keen to stay in the town, but were finding it hard to find anything they could afford. They were welcomed to their new home last week by the Mayor of Tring, Councillor John Allan.

"We thought we would have to save for a much larger deposit if we wanted to stay in the area but then we spotted the five new affordable homes being built in White House Gardens." said Michaela.

"Buying a share of the property meant that we didn’t need such a big deposit up front, but we hope to buy more shares in our home as and when we can afford it." said Michaela.

"We are delighted to be able to help local people like Michaela and Lewis take their first step onto the property ladder – particularly in an area like Tring where there are so few starter homes." said David Bogle, Chief Executive of Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association.

Shared ownership is an easy and affordable way to buy your own home by purchasing a share in a property (normally between 50% and 75%) and paying subsidised rent on the remaining share. You can buy further shares when you can afford to, until you eventually own the property outright. At White House Gardens the three remaining houses start from £147,500 for a 50% share.
